Winter Time

i'm so lucky. i get to celebrate 3 winter solstices in a row. HUZZAH. (fireworks)

winter finally hit Paraguay, and no, there is no snow or santa clause, but it sure is cold. 

Paraguay is a HOT country, so any time there is cloud cover or a little breeze during the "winter time" Paraguayans would walk around with huge jackets, scarves, gloves and hats even though it's warm.  

but now it is FOR REAL. before i would make fun of my coworkers because they were all covered up when i thought it was hot. now i'm sitting in the office wearing a sweater and a jacket i found in a bin of free clothes in my last apartment complex. my fingers even have a hard time typing. 

but i'm not complaining. i'll be in summer land in a week.

woke up at 6:30 to catch the 7:30 joy ride on the bus. laura and i were headed to a Fundación Paraguaya office to interview more women about their micro businesses. one of my favorite things in Paraguay are the bus rides. what wakes me up in the morning is knowing i'm going to catch a bus. these were the women we spoke to. the committee's name is "Mujeres Emprendedoras" and i interviewed four women. their businesses consisted of selling lightbulb and other electrical equipment, bijouterie (that's what they call jewelry here), and 2 lingerie businesses. then we took a bus (un colectivo) and got off at an intersection. we were told to stay there and wait for one of the girls from the office. she was going to meet up with us because there was a HUGE fair at a park, and we volunteered to stand and look pretty at the Fundación booth. we got there and waited and waited and waited and waited. after being here for a few weeks, we are now familiar with "paraguayan ...

a hot bus ride

anyone want a cheap awesome roller coaster ride? these buses here are insane! 50 cents to travel around the city. you wave a bus down, pay the driver the money, he looks down at it and counts it as he is flooring it, and then hands you a little ticket. i don't know why there is a white line in the middle of the road. it's like an aesthetic, not necessary, just nice. vendors walk on and off yelling coooka, manzana, peraaaa.... and people buy little snacks. it is also HOT HOT HOT and HUMID HUMID HUMID. i came at a good time because it is their fall season and it gets about 29C (i think that's about 85F). they said that the hottest it gets is around 45C and to my understanding it's about 113F. while i was working, i saw a beer ad, multiple beer ads, they were icy and beautiful. it looked so refreshing, i was really tempted to buy one. this is the first time in a long time i was swayed by an advertisement. my hair: crazys. i don't want to wash it brush it touch it. whic...

planet earth

i love watching planet earth. each episode features a habitat on earth in high definition and shows some close ups of wildlife. sometime i feel like i can make a little planet earth video here. woke up and there was a giant red, fat centipede crawling slowly by my bed (and my bed is less than a foot away from the floor), and i'm pretty sure that thing can jump... i think. and then that night i was in the kitchen and then a rat, bigger than a pregnant guinea pig was leaping across the floor. i really do like nature, but outside.
